February 23rd 2013

On Saturday, February 23rd 2013, MCLA hosted a mural tour to the Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM), of the Arts District in Downtown LA. The tour started off with unexpected special guest, Jim Morphesis, an artist and the model for Kent Twitchell’s iconic 1984 “Jim Morhphesis Monument” mural, which MCLA restored in late 2011. Daniel Lahoda, curator of the Arts District,  and owner of LALA Gallery, later joined us. Daniel spoke about the newest addition to the Arts District, a second mural from the series, Beautifully Destroyed, by street artist RISK .

In honor of Valentines Day, MCLA decided to show some mural love and host a Freeway Workshop for Frank Romero’s Going to the Olympics, a 1984 Olympic Freeway Mural. Artists, art students, and art advocates from Otis College of Art and Design were invited to observe as MCLA’s commissioned restorer Willie Herrón III worked his restoration magic. Artist of the Month March 2013 Risk

"In a career spanning 30 years, RISK has impacted the evolution of graffiti as an art form in Los Angeles and worldwide. RISK gained major notoriety for his unique style and pushed the limits of graffiti further than any writer in L.A. had before: He was one of the first writers in Southern California to paint freight trains, and he pioneered writing on “heavens,” or freeway overpasses. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third rail series of art shows, and later parlayed the name into the first authentic line of graffiti inspired clothing..." The Mural Ordinance at
Planning and Land Use Management
January 15th 2013

Progress at last! The Mural Ordinance was passed by the Planning and Land Use Management Committee (PLUM), which is comprised of Councilmembers Ed Reyes, José Huizar, and Mitchell Englander. After much debate, the Councilmembers managed to push the ordinance forward with modifications, including having existing murals grandfathered in once the ordinance is passed. An outstanding issue from the January 15th, 2013 PLUM hearing is the minimum number of units for a residential building to be allowed to display a mural. There was significant discussion at PLUM regarding such a ban of murals on single-family home and it was suggested that more time be allowed for further input. In this next phase, the ordinance must be approved by City Council. Here at MCLA, we are often asked who the mysterious woman from Kent Twitchell’s 7th Street Altarpiece mural is, and why she was chosen by Kent. Lita Albuquerque is a painter, sculptor, environmental and installation artist, who resides in Los Angeles. Her career began in the early 1970s, and she has been making art ever since. In addition to her work as an artist, she has also been an educator at the Fine Art Graduate Program at Art Center College of Design for the past 22 years. What we have been up to...

Restoration of Frank Romero’s 1984
“Going to the Olympics”
December 6th 2012

There’s no slowing us down! Although the end of the year means a break for many, we at MCLA powered through and worked with restorers to begin work on another Olympic freeway mural. This time, we teamed up with world-renown muralist Frank Romero to bring back his beloved mural, Going to the Olympics. Work began in early December with hopes that, weather permitting, restoration would be completed by the end of February. This restoration was made possible through the generosity of The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, Wells Fargo, our wonderful members, Caltran’s logistic expertise, and MCLA's commissioned restorer Willie Herrón III and his wonderful team.

Mural Ordinance - PLUM Commission
November 11th 2012

After a long review process, Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) has decided to withhold passing the Mural Ordinance until the Department of City Planning (DCP) makes some much needed revisions. Although several topics were discussed, problem areas include murals on dwelling units (five units or less versus single family units), and whether or not neighborhoods should have the ability to veto unwanted murals. An updated version ready for review has a projected completion date of January 15th 2013, when it will be reviewed by PLUM once more. To read the latest version of the mural ordinance click here

Regarding where she was born and raised: "I was born in a place now known as Watts,  85th and Central to be exact. My mother was a single parent and we lived in a small house, a duplex. At the time, it was right after the war, 1946, Watts was actually filled with Turnip fields and chicken farms and a kind of vibrant African American Latino community."

Venice Art Walls Changes Leadership
September 2 2012

The Venice Art Walls is a program managed by ICU Art, and allows the Venice art community to freely and legally paint on its walls. Recently, there was much doubt about whether this program would survive beyond 2012, as recent budget cuts have risked its livelihood. Luckily, the program has switched to the STP Foundation and CanLove. The album below is of ICU Art’s final days as the manager of the Venice Art Walls.

Josefina Quezada Memorial
           August 19th 2012

On August 19th, MCLA, as part of  “The Friends of Josefina Quezada”, held a memorial at The Pico House, in honor of Josefina Quezada’s contributions and legacy. Josefina helped set in motion the preservation of Siqueiros’ América Tropicaland served as a cultural bridge between México and Los Angeles from the day she arrived in our city. She was a friend and mentor to many artists and art historians alike. “Doña Jose”, as she was so lovingly called, passed away this past May in the country of her birth. She went back, knowing that maestro Siqueiros would be proud to know that she helped place in motion the preservation of América Tropical. Her murals and her artistic contributions to our city will be a legacy for generations to come.

On a memorable response to his work: "One of the great things about when I’m in the process of creating paintings on the streets or murals, people come by and stop to talk to you. That’s really, to me, the jewel of it. They offer to donate money on the spot or they bring you something to eat or just the conversation or talking about who’s in the mural that they know or talking about “we’re going to protect this because this is ours.” Its great to get recognition through newspapers, magazines, critics, and the commissions are great but when you connect with the people that live with these pieces everyday, I think that’s really what the heart and beauty is."

Mural Ordinance Hearing at City Hall
July 12th 2012

After the release of the very much-anticipated Mural Ordinance Recommendation Report, art advocates were anxious to attend the hearing in City Hall to voice their concerns. On Thursday, July 12th the Los Angeles City Planning Commission could not come to agreement about certain suggested amendments, and chose to reconvene on September 13th to reevaluate the ordinance again. If the Mural Ordinance Report and Recommendations are agreed and approved upon by the City Planning Commission, it will move to the Planning and Land Use Committee before finally being adopted by City Council. If you were unable to attend, and would like to know more about what issues were raised, there are several articles listed at the end of the newsletter that go into depth about what was discussed.

MCLA’s Free Legal Forum at Avenue 50 Studio
July 19th 2012

In response to questions raised at the recent Mural Ordinance Hearing, regarding VARA and CAPA rights for muralists, MCLA offered a free Legal Forum on Thursday, July 19th. The meeting took place at Avenue 50 Studio, and was led by both MCLA and Intellectual Property Attorney Eric Bjorgum. Bjorgum was involved in the legal settlement regarding artist’s rights, which was for the painting-over of the iconicEd Ruscha Monument by Kent Twitchell.  If you are interested in getting the full pamphlet of everything discussed at the forum, you can download it here. Major topics of discussion included: 1. Property rights that muralists have, 2. How to register copyrights and the visual artists' rights, with the U.S. government, 3. How these rights interface with the new mural ordinance.

The memorial will be held at The Pico House at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, 424 North Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Eliseo Art Silva
In regards to a memorable response to his work: " A lot things have been said about this mural, but the most moving ones were when they say that, “the first time I saw your mural I found myself in tears.” They were moved to tears when they saw it. Some people say, “I would come here, in a year, probably five times just to inspire myself.” They find themselves spending an hour just looking at the mural just trying to nourish spiritually. So that’s the highest complement for me is for people to get moved to tears in front of my work. "
