In 1972 Fukuhara received his BA in ceramics from San Diego University. He has also studied at Pond Farm Pottery in Guerneville, California, in Japan, and at California State University, Long Beach. After seven years as a potter, he decided to address a larger audience by creating public art. He spent three summers as a mural instructor for the City of Long Beach Summer Youth Employment Training Program. Besides painting murals, he sculpts in stone, steel and bronze, and teaches part-time at California State University, Long Beach. (Robin K.
