Self-taught, Dixon (1875-1946) specialized in western landscapes and portrayals of Native American life. Born in Fresno, California, he often traveled throughout the West. A large collection of his work is at Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, Utah. His largest mural, on the development of civilization in California, was done in 1928 for the main reading room of the Sacramento State Library. He did other New Deal murals in the post office in Martinez, in northern California, and for the Department of the Interior, in Washington, D.C. (Robin K.
