A native of El Salvador, Ponce spent six years living in Mexico before coming to Los Angeles about 10 years ago. Self-taught, he is primarily a commercial sign painter, doing a few murals each year. He is hoping to one day soon paint a giant portrait of actor Edward James Olmos as math teacher Jaime Escalante (made famous in the film Stand and Deliver). (Robin K. Latin American immigrants come to the U.S. At the far left the Statue of Liberty appears as a mirage that is beyond reach.
